Bleeding...help?!!!?

ok i have a BIG problem! i stopped getting my period regularly. and now it only comes like once every 6 months.if that. bigger than that is that when it does come it stays on for up to 2 i/2 wks!!! And i bleed very heavily. this has been happening for about 3 yrs and i'm starting to get really scared...so here's the question: is there a such thing as a backed up period? i mean is it possible that i bleed so heavily at one time because i dont get a regular period? and plus if there is such a thing, is there any suggestion to stop this from happening? i admit that i dont eat regularly and i hear that that can have an effect on having a regular period.and i do plan to go to the doctor but i wanna have at least an idea of what is wrong first ...so someone...anyone...pls help?!!!
Answer:
you may have endometriosis, fibroids or a condition called PCOS. how old are you? you having weight gain, hair growth, any other syptoms?

you need to get to a gynocologist asap. missed periods like this are very serious and can cause infertility.
You're gonna need to go to the doctor, sweetie. While irregular periods are common, going several months without one certainly isn't. You might have a condition called endometriosis. There are lots of symptoms associated with it, but not everyone experiences the same ones, or in the same combination. What you're describing is one of the classic symptoms. I'll include a link so you can do your own research, but you're going to have to get it checked out.

There are many things that could be what is causing your issues. I had a friend with Lupus that would only get a period every once in awhile but then bleed heavily and for a long time. It could be related to your eating habits (women should have approximately 20% body fat in order to have regular periods -- lack of periods due to low body fat can lead to infertility). It could be some other hormone imbalance. Etc.

Only a doctor will be able to ask all of the right questions and do all of the right tests to find out what is going on. Make an appointment ASAP.
You really have a problem. You are not bleeding so much because you are losing the blood you didn't lose last month. You are bleeding so much because something is wrong. And it's not normal to miss so many periods. Only a doctor can tell you what is your problem.
I heard something similar from a patient of mine who was taking some pills to lose weight. If you do that stop immediately the pills and go to a doctor right away.
if you are a teenager, your problem can be just temporary but you need treatment to get it fix. The biggest problem about that is the fact is affecting your capacity of having kids latter. And that's very serious.
So see a doctor this week, tomorrow won't be too soon.
Good luck.

I doubt that you'll get a good answer on this site, so don't hold your breath.

Go see a doctor ASAP.
No, there isn't anything where the period can get backed up to cause irregularity. What was thought of as a back up of menstrual flow was a theory that was thought to have been the cause of endometriosis. It was a theory that dated back to the 1920s but that theory ended up getting proved wrong.

It sounds like you might have a hormone imbalance going on. One of the symptoms of thyroid problems for women can be irregular bleeding, and this irregular bleeding is what takes many of them to their gynecologists who then end up finding the problem.

This bleeding that you are having that continues for almost 3 weeks is called breakthrough bleeding and can act a lot like a menstrual period.

Ask your dr about the possibility of thyroid problems as a possible cause for this bleeding. I learned about the connection between thyroid issues and irregular bleeding from my gyn on Thurs.
Skipping 6months without a period is definitely not normal. Please go to your doctor and tell them. You may need to take birth control to regulate your period. Good luck and please please please, get it checked out!
